20 YEARS
SAILING TOGETHER
Who we are

Since the beginning of time, the people of the Azores have used the sea as a connecting element to overcome the emotional and commercial distances felt within the archipelago. Therefore, the history of maritime navigation in the Azores is long.

As a result of this dynamic, in 1871 the Empresa Insulana de Navegação (Island Navigation Company) was established, which, for more than a century, ensured regular inter-island traffic, as well as connections with Madeira and the United States. In the 1980s, inter-island passenger maritime transport was interrupted, with the exception of connections between some islands of the Central and Western Groups. About 20 years later, at the end of the 1990s, the focus on regional passenger maritime transport was resumed.

Regarding passenger maritime transport in the Azores, it is important to highlight the dynamics of the islands of the Central Group Triangle – Faial, Pico, and São Jorge – where, due to the proximity between the three islands, maritime connections gained particular importance from early on. Several companies dedicated themselves to this transport in that area.
